June 10, 1998:

What Workers are Looking For

In a recent poll conducted by the American Management Association, secretaries reported their top pet peeves were bosses who:

  • lie,
  • don't give clear instructions,
  • don't tell their whereabouts,
  • and take credit for the secretary's ideas.

The results of this study are reflective of trends in employee attitudes—among all employees—we’re seeing emerge in today’s workplace. In study after study, we see a new focus on honesty, ethics, integrity, and feeling good about the values their employers stand for. When that integrity is called into question, the organization becomes vulnerable to turnover.

Second, we know that employees are demanding the support that they need to get the job done, and that support includes "clear instructions" and agreed-upon expectations. They also want abundant information. They want to know about the company’s focus, success, and opportunities for improvement—particularly in areas where they can make a positive difference. People want to be involved.

Finally, people want credit for their efforts, ideas, input. They want to feel like they are contributing to the success of the organization and be recognized for their contributions. This recognition is an integral part of what employees are calling "meaningful work."

Organizations who pay attention to the wants, needs, values, and attitudes of their employees will have a much easier time attracting, optimizing, and retaining good employees. Astute employers will be more sensitive to these issues, as the competition for competent workers intensifies.
