5 Star Employer Employer Support of the Guard (ESGR), an agency of the United States Department of Defense, recognizes employers who demonstrate—quietly or overtly—their support of the National Guard and the Military Reserves. ESGR was chartered in 1972 and is an information resource for employers and members of the National Guard and Reserve. ESGR minimizes conflicts between military duties and civilian career responsibilities. Today almost half of the nation's military strength resides in the National Guard and Reserve. Five levels of support are recognized. One-Star employers validate their support of the Guard and Reserve and agree to follow the guidelines of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). Other requirements relate to increased levels of support: 2-stars, 3-stars, and four stars. Five star employers, relatively unusual, become overt advocates as well as quiet supporters. Roger E.
