The Electric Cars are Coming

For those who favor The Green New Deal, electric cars cannot get here fast enough. The world's largest car manufacturers debuted their latest designs and concepts to the general public last week at the Geneva International Motor Show.

Cleaner air through electric mobility
You may remember when several major car makers falsified their diesel emissions test results; those scandals set the stage for the exponential rise in the popularity of electric vehicles. Now, again in 2019, electric mobility was highlighted in an effort to demonstrate the industry's commitment to cleaner air.

Data collected from multiple sources
In a recent post from Statista.com,"Who Leads the Charge Towards Electric Mobility?", there is a chart of data aggregated from car manufacturers' associations and other industry groups, including ACEA, CAAM, Inside EVs, BEA, and JAMA. The chart illustrates that the percentages of electric vehicles, including plug-in hybrids and light trucks, sold and registered throughout the globe is still relatively low.

The surprising country leaders
The highest electric vehicle market share is 49.1 percent in Norway. The second highest percentage 4.4 percent in China---less than 1/10 of the Scandinavian country. At the same time, all of the other percentages were 2.5 percent (United Kingdom) or lower. The United States tied with France at 2.1 percent; Germany clocked in at 2.0 percent, and Japan brings up the rear at only 1.2 percent.

The numbers of vehicles are a different story
Due to the differences in populations, the number of electric cars in China dwarfs the numbers of all of the other countries at 1,053,000 electric cars. Coming in second is the US at 361,307 plug-in electric vehicles. Third is Norway at 72,689, then comes Germany (67,658), UK (59,947), Japan (52,013), and France (45,623).

Relatively slow start for electric cars
With these small percentages, it is difficult to imagine other countries matching Norway's adoption where in 2018, every second newly registered vehicle was battery-driven. As Statista's chart reflects, the present automobile industry still sells many more fuel combustion engines than those that are battery-powered. That said, the electric cars are coming, especially when we think about our car-sharing future.
