Employers Resort to Out-of-State Recruiting

With the shortage of qualified workers hindering corporate performance, employers are beginning to recruit out of town more seriously. When they can’t find the talent locally, human resource professionals are placing advertisements in newspapers in other cities. They’re recruiting more through the internet—searching resume data bases that grow every day. Corporate web sites now feature job opportunities pages, inviting responses from all over.

The search is on for competent workers to fill all kinds of positions. Hotels, hungry for people, are stepping up their recruiting. Some properties have engaged in distance recruiting for some time, even bringing in workers temporarily from foreign countries to ease the strain. An article in the current issue of the HUMAN RESOURCE EXECUTIVE Magazine reports that Orlando hoteliers are recruiting collectively through the Central Florida Hotel Motel Association. A joint venture with the Baltimore Consulting Group will see recruiters and job fairs in El Paso, Puerto Rico, and other locations.

In some cases, the new workers will move to Orlando. Watch for more growth there, just as we see in Las Vegas as a result of all the recruiting to staff the new casino hotels. Some workers will try out the new opportunity, then move back home or to another locale that will recruit in Orlando. Workers are mobile again, but now will be moving more frequently.
