Press Release
Mark D. Livingston, vice president of The Herman Group, received the Joe A. Callaway Award for Civic Courage at a reception and ceremony at the Carnegie Institution Building in Washington, D.C. He was one of two recipients of this annual award which “recognizes courageous individuals who, with integrity and at some personal risk, take a public stance to advance truth and justice, and who challenged prevailing conditions in pursuit of the common good.” Livingston was recognized for his attempt to change the dysfunctional regulatory compliance culture of a Wyeth Pharmaceuticals manufacturing plant in the years 2000-2002. This North Carolina facility is the sole production site for a pediatric vaccine taken in a four-dose regimen by every infant in the United States at 2, 4, 6, and 12 months. The Shafeek Nader Trust for the Community Interest is the administrator of the award. This non-profit organization is headed by Claire Nader, sister of the late Shafeek Nader and consumer advocate/presidential candidate Ralph Nader. This year’s other award winner is Dr. David Graham, the FDA scientist who has publicly challenged drug safety review and monitoring policy and procedures at the Food and Drug Administration. Livingston and Graham delivered speeches upon acceptance of the award. In attendance were Ralph Nader, Dr. Sidney Wolfe and Joan Claybrook of Public Citizen, as well as 75 other guests. A 21-year veteran organization development, human resource, training, and quality improvement professional, Livingston serves as vice president for training and certification for The Herman Group, Greensboro.
